Ok, just noticed this refurbished machine will not make a Start Up disk.

When I start the process of making a Start Up disk it wants the installation CD for command.com and several files after that.

I do understand I can get a Start Up disk from one of my other 98 computers or from the net. But it seems like this may be indicative of some additional problem.

I suspect it's a simple fix but what is it?

    Thanks
    Bill

Easier and better way: Go to:
    http://www.bootdisk.com
and download the correct one. Read the directions first.

    Thank you junker39.

The above is an interesting site. However, I would still like to fix the computer so it can make Start Up disks.

This is a "Frankenstein" computer I assembled from dead computers. When it came to life I should have yelled "It's Alive -it's alive!" (a quote from the 1933 Frankenstein movie) LOL

As for the "recovery disk" -recovery CD???

    Bob,

I Fdisk(ed) the HD to create a small 200 MB extended data drive, then formated the primary and data drive, and finally installed win98se from a CD.

    Prospect,

OK gotcha, yes tried that but had no idea where the desired files, (after command com), were stored. Maybe one of the many CAB files?
