Every time I try opening my inbox in Outlook Express I get the following message
    Folder could not be displayed

Outlook Express could not open this folder.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Possible causes are:

    Low disk space.

    Low memory.

    Outlook Express

In the beginning I was able to restart my computer and it gave me a temporary fix for the problem. Now, even that doesn't work. All my other programs are working fine on this computer. ??????

What do you have in the way of free hard drive space?

We assume that you are running Windows since it's Outlook Express, but what version?

    Microsoft suggest this fix:

CAUSEThis behavior can occur if the attributes of any or all of the Outlook Express *.dbx mail files are set to read only.

RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, remove the read-only attribute from the Outlook Express *.dbx mail files:

    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

    2. In the Named box, type *.dbx, in the Look in box, click Local hard drives (C:), and then click Find Now.

    3. For each *.dbx file that is found, right-click the file, click Properties, and then clear the Read-only check box.

    4. Click Apply, and then click Close.

NOTE: The *.dbx files should only have the Archive check box selected.

I am running Window 98 second edition and have 10.2 gb available out of 37.2 gb. I checked all my dbx files and they were all unchecked by the read only box. Is there any way for me to get into my old emails aside from the outlook express program?

365,554 kb. It was a lot bigger but I was working on deleting them when I incurred this problem.

Can you open Outlook Express at all?

If so, check this setting in Outlook Express:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab,
if there, remove the check mark for Compact messages in the background
Apply, OK to save and close.
this is a default setting that can cause corruption in your .dbx files.
If you have more than one Identity, check each Identity to ensure this process has been disabled.

Outlook Express is probably due for some maintenance.
    Close all windows.
    Open Outlook Express
    File > Work Offline
Click on the Local Folders folder
File > Folder > Compact All Folders
Walk away from the computer until the process is complete.
Avoid starting this process if the possibility of a power outage is imminent such as a thunderstorm in progress.
Should the compaction process ever be interrupted, restart it before accessing any folders and allow it to finish.

Once the compaction process is finished close Outlook Express and restart the computer.
Then access the Inbox to see if the error still persists.

    Let us know what happens.

    With Outlook Express closed:
    Do a Find for: Folders.dbx
Rename it Folders.old, if you find more than one Folders.dbx file, rename them as well.

Restart Outlook Express, a new Folders.dbx file will be created, see if the error still occurs.
If you can access the Inbox folder without errors, completely empty the Inbox folder.
Move messages you want to keep to folders of your own creation in Outlook Express.

Then try compacting the message store again.

    Let us know what happens.
