I can't open IE7 or 8 on the user side of a computer. Opens ok on admin side. When I click on IE icon, I get an "open with" dialogue box. Tried reinstalling IE7, but problem still exists.

    Invalid shortcut?
    Try opening it from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

Also run a Full scan with SAS and MalwareBytes.

    Follow the below instructions Carefully:
    1. Download HiJackThis from the link in my signature
    2. Run a Scan.
    3. Save a Logfile(On your Desktop)
    4. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING BY YOURSELF.
(Fixing Anything Might cause Unwanted System Instability,BSOD's and Even Render your System Unusable)
5.Copy and Paste all the contents
    6. Paste them in the reply Window

Ran SAS and Malware - no major issues. Here's my HJT log. Did uninstall WildTangent - may be some junk let in registry to clean up. Please advise

Can you run any programs or do they all say "open with " ?
Maybe you need to run XP exe fix if you can't run any other prog.

You're correct - I can't open any Microsoft programs on my daughter's side of the computer. Everything opens fine on my side (administrator). What's XP exe fix?

    Try this fix: EXEFIX

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

    Reboot.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Run it from the "user side".

Miggs - running from the User side did the trick. Problem resolved. Anything in the HJT post that I should be concerned about?
Another great job by the magicians at TechGuy. Thanks

Try using the Startup Manager from my signature.
Its GUI is better than that of msconfig and is also safe than msconfig

You can download and run Autoruns.

    Click on Options.

Put a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries.

Hit the F5 key to refresh your page.

    Select the Logon tab.

    Uncheck the following items:

    ehTray

    SigmatelSysTrayApp

    IAAnotif

    DMXLauncher

    DLA

    NvCplDaemon

    AppleSyncNotifier

    Carbonite Backup

    QuickTime Task

    nmctxth

    Linksys Wireless Manager

    WildTangent CDA Uninstall0

    MSMSGS

    swg

Other than your antivirus, firewall and Internet connectivity service, the Startup Type on most of your non-Microsoft Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

    Select the Services tab.

Only non-Microsoft services will be showing.

    Right-click on any service.

    Click on Jump to...

You will now be at the exact registry key for that service.

In the right-hand pane, look at the DWORD Start.

The last number at the end of the entry will be either:

    (0) for Boot.

    (1) for System.

    (2) for Automatic.

    (3) for Manual.

    (4) for Disabled.

If you want to change the value, double-click on Start and change the number accordingly.

    Reboot the computer.
