I keep getting the message "Quicken Essentials can't be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed...Safari downloaded this file on 1/17/2014 from pesdid.shop.intuit.com"

Right click on the file and choose open from the contextual menu.
A dialog should open, allow it to run.

From now on you should be able to directly double click to launch the app.

You never mentioned what version of OS X you are running, but the latest version require software to be signed by the developer. Not all developers do. One would think a big company like Intuit would do it.
Might be a reasonable question to ask Intuit support.
