Can't Ping

Hey all,
Here is the deal AMD 500 128 RAM, WinMe, on a network running through a SMC 8 port DSL router, with high speed cable ISP.
I am installing AOL on one of the compters with connection on TCP/IP so we can still get email.
AOL gave me an "can't connect through TCP/IP" error .
So I tried to ping and said "unknown host....".
But I still have connection to the internet and I can recieve email through Outlook and everything else is running fine.

My steps to fix(none worked):
1.removed network and replaced
2.changed ports on router
3.changed NIC cards
4.Thourghput tested the cat5
5.uninstalled AOL COMPLETLY and reinstalled

and still with all that nothing has worked, maybe corrupt Windows but no other errors appear.

Keep in mind that the computer connects to the internet fine just wont connect through TCP/IP on AOL and won't Ping, but will loopback.

How are you trying to ping AOHELL? By IP address or by name? THe AOL application will probably not work with a broadband connection. Just go to www.aol.com....who needs all that graphical, GUI candy coated junk anyway.

I have tried to Ping both ways and keeps giving me "unknown host...." .
and my clients want all that GUI crap ......

Does it work on any other computer?
Try uninstalling and reinstalling DUN on the PC and then reinstall AOL.
On the ping, you're trying it from a command prompt, using "ping www.aol.com" or just "ping aol.com" and getting unknown host, right? Look for a "hosts" file (no extension) and see if the entry is there.
If that fails, it almost sounds like your ISP is blocking AOL requests for some reason, none that I can think of to be valid.

Who is the ISP you are trying to connect to AOL thru? FInd out what their DNS server address is and manually add it to the network configuration.

From what I can tell this is "computer specific" , the AOL that was on another computer works through TCP/IP.

I have Pinged every possible way.

"Try uninstalling and reinstalling DUN on the PC and then reinstall AOL.".....I have totally uninstalled AOL, all Networking & DUN. After nwtworking goes in ...i can get on the internet but still can't ping, but can ping from all other computers on the Network.

Have you tried connecting the AOL box directly to the cable drop?
Maybe a configuration setting problem on your router?

The previous computer that was in this area had AOL on it and connected just fine.....its something in the compter....and I have done everything , I think , except Fdisk, format
