Hi, don't know how this site works, but i'll post my problem anyhow.

Basically, i was having problems with viruses and so i installed McAfee 2005- it cleared all infections bar 'w32.alemod.a.dll'. Then my wall paper changed, saying 'security warning, a fatal error has occured....'

knowing nothing about computers i just switched the power off on, but the same wallpaper comes up and i can't access any of the menu screens- i don't know what to do

What i have tried- i can access the task manager, through that i accessed the system restore, that didn't work

Please help

Hi, I recently have had problems with viruses on XP home ed- so I installed McAfee 2005. It got rid of all infections bar 'C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\WININET.dll is infected with w32/Alemod.dll'- then everything started to go wrong.

Firstly I couldn't use internet explorer, my backround changed saying something like

'Warning...error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.smithfraud... system can't operate in normal mode...'

Knowing nothing about computers i just turned the power off and back on- when it restarted the backround was still there but none of the desktop shortcuts, nor the start menu - I really need help with this!!

Things i have done: the only thing you can access is task manager, through this you can access some of the programs, so i accessed system restore, and tried restoring to an earlier date, this didn't work. I also tried the same in safe mode without any luck

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Hello, I posted a problem with viruses earlier, but now have given up trying to solve it. So i tried to use my factory resore disk (for a toshiba 2450-S203)
but it doesn't work. It starts up properly and gets to about 10% on the progress indicator but then the screen goes black and the message

'!!!ERROR!!! Extraction failed' appears

can anyone help??

Thanks

I have merged your two threads together. If you'd like to post a Hijack This log, this could be fixable. If not, let me know and I'll move this over to the XP forum for assistance.

Please do this. Click here to download HijackThis.

Close all open windows and open HijackThis. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished, the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to Notepad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

Things have gotten worse- every time i try to start the laptop now i just get

'Invalid system disk . Replace the disk, and then press any key' even though i have no disk in there and my boot priority is on HDD-FDD-CD rom-LAN

thanks for the reply and if you can still help that'd be great

I have moved this over to the XP forum as I believe you are beyond the point of fixing the malware and need to reformat.

Someone should be along to help you with that here.

Okay so I have missed this part of your post. When you use the supplied restore disk it actually FORMATS your hard disk first to prepare it for installing the original OS-windows I believe because it is a Toshiba, and all the associated extras that came with the laptop. It came to 10% and I believe that is 10% FORMATTED! In that case the hard disk had been partially erased so it will no longer boot.
I cannot tell you why you are getting the extraction failed error. The restore disk may be damaged or hopefully just dirty.Try cleaning the disk with a lint free cloth and a little water the try to boot using the disk.
