I have Defender Pro 10-1 on my computer. The Virus protection part of the program expired in just a few months and I don't want to pay more to have a new key, I paid enough already. I was trying toinstall Norton and it says it cannot install because Defender Pro is there. I tried to uninstall through add and remove. I tried the uninstall that came with Defender Pro, and tried to go into program files and delete the folder myself. It will not uninstall because it is still running. I have exited everything I know how to exit. It just won't let me go any further. It is getting scary cuz I haven't any protection for several days now.
I was reading someone elses answer and downloaded the myunistall but got the same message. If this is running on my machine I can't find where.
I am running Win. XP Pro.

    Thanks,

    Nancy

Hi, Usually these run as services....they can be stubborn and the uninstall doesn't work just right... I am not familiar with the program, but if you could post the two things below, it may help to see what is running....

    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
the next step can be skipped if you are on your computer, and it has Internet access that works.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    • At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
    • Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
    • At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit Edit then Paste
    • You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Do a scan and save a log, and post that....then, run Hijackthis again, but this time, hit the "Open the Misc Tools" section, then open the "Open Uninstall Manager" and then hit the "Save List" button, copy the entire list into your reply....

And lastly, give us a startup list from Hijackthis:

Generate Startup List> top of the window. Put a check into List Minor sections. Copy and paste the contents of it into your reply, use more than one reply or attach the files to your post.

I think I can offer a quick fix on the Defender process which is running.

    Start > Run: cmd

    In the command window enter:

    sc delete kavsvc

Now reboot and this item should no longer be present in the scanlog:

    O23 - Service: kavsvc - Kaspersky Labs - C:\Program Files\Defender\Defender Pro 2005\kavsvc.exe

You should then be able to delete the "Defender" folder.

It worked. I have Norton installed and updating. I appreciate it more than you know. I am going to run a full scan now to see if anything creeped in while I was not protected.

Hi, Rog> glad you posted that!

    kitty-

From what I've just been reading about Defender 10 and a lot of their versions, it's a pretty sensitve program that has a lot of issues with updating and performance.
The problem with the License expiring I read about too, lots of people had to email and get a new key to enter into the program...
to extend their time to use the program.

In support of Defender, there were just as many positive opinions about it.... Made by Kaspersky Labs. Has a lot of features and those who liked it really liked it, those who had problems said their support was friendly and helpful> in case anyone wants to try it.

Glad you were able to get it uninstalled!

Hope things work out with Norton.

    Glad to help (y)

I like the "sc delete" method of getting rid of services. The challenge sometimes is to figure out what the actual service name is. It isn't always apparent the way it is listed in the Scanlog.
