it's been a few days and i got around to following the instructions you all gave me (cw shredder, restart, s&d, restart, adaware, restart). i couldn't do one thing though...update windows. if i try to use IE, it locks up (i use firefox 99% of the time) and if i go into control panel and click the icon or try to get to the automatic updates tab through System i get the message

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysdm.cpl",System"

i'm not sure what that is about or how to fix it. i'd like to be able to get the new security for my windows but this seems impossible at the moment. any ideas?

thanks in advance for any help.

    here's my new HJT log:

have you tried doing a system file check ? you goto start-programs- accessories -system tools- system information - tools- scan file checker -scan files for altered files -start. you need your win 98 disk if you have a missing file . to get file from cd ,type in D:\win98
