    Hello.

I was putting another hard drive in my computer, when I noticed that there is a third slot for RAM which is empty. The other two slots each have a 512mb stick. When I try to boot with an additional 512mb stick in the third slot, I get beeping from the motherboard and nothing on screen. (Fans and lights come on. 2 second repeating beep from motherboard.)

So, my question is, can I add more RAM using this slot?
    If yes, how?
If no, what is it for?

PS: Here is some hardware info:
    Code:
    [email protected]:~$ sudo lshw

    [sudo] password for stretch:

i'm sure others will answer re the memory slot, BUT with XP - you probably wont see much gain above the 1GB ram you already use

what sort of use do you put the XP machine to ?

It is another RAM slot and should be usable. Do one of the original two sticks work in that 3rd slot if you leave out the new stick? The new stick may not be compatible or may be faulty.

Windows XP can indeed run better with more than 1GB of RAM depending on usage.

The Microstar International(MSI) MS-6570 motherboard has 3 slots and supports a maximum of 3 GB of RAM.

It uses these 512 MB or 1 GB modules:

    184-pin DDR PC2700(DDR333), 2.5 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC

    184-pin DDR PC3200(DDR400), 2.6 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...5 600006040 600006060&IsNodeId=1&name=Crucial

Installing matching modules(speed and capacity) is usually best because it reduces the risk of incompatibility between modules.

I'm not using Windows XP. I'm using Xubuntu Linux.

The RAM stick I'm trying to add is one of two that I pulled out of an old busted PC.
I'll try the other RAM stick I pulled out, and try just moving one of the already installed sticks to the third slot.

I've go to leave for work now, but I'll let you guys know how it works out later.
