My disk has been giving me problems lately.

First there are random freezes where the HDD light comes full on for a minute or more and locks up my PC completely, then it just recovers the disk grinds away happily and all is well again.

Second, whenever I try to write a file to this disk from anywhere (Internet download, DVD drive, flashdrive, other disk), its like it stutters, it will write to disk VERY slowly and it will stop and start, while constantly locking up my machine.

But it reads fine from that disk.

Now I have checked the event viewer and nothing in there.
I have switched to different SATA ports. So I do not think it is the SATA controller but I can't be sure because the other disk on there is a SSD but it seems to be working fine.

    system info
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    asus P8P67 le
    WD Caviar WD500AAKS

    ram
    power supply
    brand
    model
    wattage

check the listings in the bios for 12v line voltages and cpu temperatures and post them

d/load and run the h/drive makers dos diagnostic utility on the h/drive

    system specs
    os: Windows 7 Ultimate
    mb: asus P8P67 le
    CPU: Intel Quad-core i7 2600
    RAM: 8 GIG Corsair
PSU: Cooler master Silent Pro 700 Watt
    GPU: NVIDIA GTX 560
    HDD: WD Caviar WD500AAKS

When I tried to run the Data lifeguard for WD disks it starts, Smart test says all is well but when I try to run a test manually it just says it can't. (yes I ran it as Administrator)

Chkdsk can't find any problems anymore, ran it twice, first time it found a few but they were on my secondary partition and should not be able to effect performance.

Do you mean chkdsk or the Tool from WD because chkdsk runs at startup and the tool is a windows application.

You do have a current backup of anything important on this disk correct?

Dai has given you good advise; run the test from the bootable cd rather than from within windows.
