car bomb

last night at approx 10.30pm the detonators of a car bomb exploded in smallbrook queensway birmingham.
this is ten miles from my house, its a small extremely busy street that has double dual carriageways crossing, it passes over new street station, that carries approx 300 trains per hour, it also houses a variety of shops mostly camera, computer and music shops and also a lot of highly populated nightclubs.

"luck" would have it as i said that only the detonators went off, if the 70 lbs of explosive had gone off the affects would have been devastating. reports were of white powder at the scene which started a major panic on top of everything else.

a coded warning was received, but unfortunately it was not received early enough to clear the whole area, but thankfully the bomb did not completely go off. coded warnings are known communications of the ira.

this has been put down as the work of the real ira, its so nice to see that even though their funds have been frozen we are still sitting ducks.

keep safe

didn't read about that. I better start reading the papers more.

Maybe they're starting hitting the Mainland now that all their funds have been frozen. They must be getting it from somewhere else.

Usually they target London. They're getting a bit more widespread now, which is worrying.

i was only little the last time birmingham was bombed, but strangley enough the sunday mercury (birmingham) ran a piece today on the effects that it still has on peoples lives 27 years later. 21 people were killed last time. they were covering the gerry adams story about the ira never deliberately targetting innocent civillians.

i'm supposed to be going to the bike show on saturday at the NEC and my son is going to the NIA with his nan to watch disney on ice. mr wen asked me if i was worried about my own safety and i said no. i can't believe that i never gave my son and my mother any thought.

Wen - The bombings by the IRA have been compared by some to the bombing of the WTC. The logic is, it makes as much sense for the US to bomb Afghanistan as it does for Britain to bomb Boston (because of support and funding for the IRA coming from Boston).

What do you think about that?

What is the reaction to the US bombing campaign across the Irish Sea?

Also, have you ever seen a film called "In the Name of the Father"?

I didn't realise that the money came from Boston. The thing is, that is the funding. The funding for Bin Laden is supposed to be Iraq, and that is rumoured to be bombed..again.

I suppose the reasoning is there. I don't think its just Boston, though, as its thought to be coming from all over. So, England would be at war with many countries.

I'm not defending the funding. I'm dead against it, but blaming just the one place for the funding, eg Boston, is not good. The question is: Why did they fund them? Its like if we were funding bin Laden and then the WTC happened. Would you bomb us?

I'm not over the Irish sea, but the feeling for the bombing has a wide response. However, my mum is dead against it. She didn't like it when a few civilians were killed in Afganistan, so I mentioned the 4000 dead in 30 mins. No answer. each entitled to their opinion.

In the Name Of The Father: never heard of it. Whats it about?

Wen, I didn't hear about the car bomb. That could have been devastating if it would have detonated properly. All my family live in Manchester and I do worry about them. The IRA has reared it's ugly head again.

DN, its well known that the IRA has a lot of supporters in Boston and that a lot of their funding for arms goes through there, but I don't think bombing Boston would make any sense. You need to go after the terrorists and those that enable them to do what they are doing the same as going after the Taliban and Bin Laden and not holding all of Afghanistan responsible.

BTW I saw the movie 'In the name of the Father'. It was terrible what happened to Gerry Conlon, didn't his father die in prison before he could clear his name? It was a few years ago when I saw it. Good movie and well worth watching.

yes i've seen the film, but there again i've seen alot, what was the one with brad pitt and harrison ford where brad pitt was the young irish guy all ira?

i'm not saying there haven't been miscarriages of justice all round, the guilford four etc., but the worst i have ever known was the bridgewater four. they were four men who burgled a home up the road from me, they were supposed to have murdered a newspaper boy in the burglary and they served over 20 years in jail. everyone from round here knew they didn't do it, but the high court judges knew better and would not free them and because they constantly proteseted their innoncence - of the shooting not the burgalry - they served near enough the full sentence for murder.

as far as the money for the ira coming from boston, well what can you say, it happens doesn't it , the people in boston who sent the money do they sleep well at night knowing that they were responsible for killing and maiming innocent adults and children?

i don't claim to know the deep seated hatred of the english and the full history of it, all i know is that in my 32 years i have allways thought that our soldiers should not be there - pull them all out and let the two sides kill each other, but there agin there are innocents on both sides and the soldiers have the thankless task of trying to protect them.

and no we should not be bombing boston, because boston can be educated. they can see what there money goes to and what is right and wrong.
i must state that in light of the promising start of decommisioning of the ira this weekends attack was thought to be the work of the REAL IRA, a hardline splinter group.

where as afghanistan is another matter, who ever holds the food bag is in control.

it's not the one with Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford, I've seen that but I can't remember the name of it.
This one was based on a true story and here is the storyline;

A small time theif from Belfast, Gerry Conlon, is falsely implicated in the IRA bombing of a pub that kills several people while he is in London. Bullied by the British police, he and four of his friends are coerced into confessing their guilt. Gerry's father and other relatives in London are also implicated in the crime. He spends 14 years in prison with his father trying to prove his innocence with the help of a British attorney, Gareth Peirce. Based on a true story.

I think his father actually died in prison before he proved his innocence

Wow I didn't hear about the car bomb. It is fortunate it didn't detonate properly. We never hear anything from overseas in the midwest... we always get left out. Glad you're safe. Hope we can say the same thing next time... where ever it may be.

The "Devil's Advocate" had Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. My friend LOVED that movie. I didn't think it was so hot.
