Hi, im trying to extend my network and have run into some issues.
im trying to set up a wrt54g as a second router on my network. the main router (trendnet tew-652brp) IP is 192.168.10.1, with DHCP range of 100-200 so i set up the wrt54g to have the address 192.168.10.2 and thurned off dhcp, then under 'advanced routing' switched it from gateway to router (as instructed for all cascading LAN-LAN setup guides across the internet).

I have trouble getting wifi to the far end of my house so hopefully this setup will enable that. I just purchased a Netgear powerline bridge and have that connected between the two routers as of now, I feel that this may be part of the issue? Perhaps I will try again without the powerline bridge but my network needs to span a far distance.
    ISP > Cable Modem > Trendnet TEW-652BRP > NETGEAR XAVB101 Powerline AV Ethernet > Linksys WRT54G v2.2 >

when a computer connects to the wrt54g it does not aquire an ip address (which is supposed to be assigned by the main router?) and cannot connect to the network/internet. I was connecting using a mac but have macs, pcs, and game consoles that need to connect. so when the mac connects to the main raouter everything is fine, but connecting to the wrt it says no ip adress, so i manually configure to have an ip adress 192.168.10.145 and can get to the setup page (192.168.10.2) but no internet access or anything.

I WANT it to not have to maunally configure the IP adress, and i WANT it to have internet and access to network files, I would also like to have the same SSID and auto jump to which ever access point is best (is this possible without DDWRT? I think my linksys v2.2 is capable of the hack, not sure about the trendnet. also have a nice new netgear def. capable of the hack at school but not here atm so off the table for now.

Please help. I have been reading and wonder if i need to connect the two by a crossover cable? i can do trendet->wrt (via x-over)->powerline bridge?
I also have 2 old-school WRE54G Wireless G range expanders (which I have never ever never been able to successfully work, note: it needs WEP and my other devices use the WPA standards) HELP ME BOOST MY NETWORK PLEASE

I'm not really sure what you mean, I did some research and I appears that 'Bridge mode' is associated with DDWRT 3rd-party firmware. I am trying to do this without the hack, is this possible? Linksys website seems to think so, calling it 'cascading' the two routers together. Also to use bridge mode in DDWRT it seems both routers must be DDWRT capable, and I am not sure of this.

    Question still stands.

I do not know what "cascading LAN-LAN" means, but it sounds like you really want everything to be on one local network. The way to do that is to use only one router as a router and connect/configure any other routers as switches and/or wireless access points.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a computer.] Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

i have done all that. However, when I try to connect on the end of the house that would connect to the second router (or if I have them as different ssids and choose one) then i cannot connect to internet or network, my computer does not obtain an ip address until it randomly self assigns itself one not in the network range. i have to assign myself one just to get back to the router setup page to change anything

Have you connected the computer directly to the powerline bridge to make sure the network is OK to that point (before the 2nd router)?

I inferred from your post # 5 that you haven't necessarily tried with a computer connected by ethernet to the 2nd router. Please try connecting to it by both ethernet and wireless (dynamic connections for both) and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

As I said before my mac was unable to get an ip address when connected wirelessly to the wrt (secnd) router, it appears here that i kept the address i had when connecting over wireless so im not sure if that helps or changes anything (meaning the computer already had it assigned and did not need to search)

It appears that you have good connections there by wireless and by ethernet. And you can communicate with the primary router and have internet access with each connection?

You're saying that the MAC can connect by ethernet by not by wireless (but if a static IP configuration is assigned the wireless will work)? I don't really know what might cause that, but my top suspects would be incorrect or corrupted driver or a defective wireless adapter.

I was wrong, no computers can obtain an IP address when wirelessly connecting to the second router. It appears that when the test was made above, the computer was connecting to the first router. Nothing has changed in the set up, and now it is clear that i cannot connect to internet when connected to the second router. in this test below I am using a different SSID to connect to the second router, and you can see what happens...

In this test the first test is conneted to router 1, and second is router 2. it seems to keep the same IP, but comes up as an unidentifiable network w/o internet access. please Help!

EDIT: I would also like to add that my Macbook Pro does not obtain an IP adress when connecting, and my Wii, android phone, and iPod touch do not connect to internet when in this routers area (WiFi).

Just wait for the wind to change direction again. :)

When you have the problem of getting an IP configuration assigned but no internet access the first thing I'd try is a few pings. These are typed in a Command prompt window and can be posted here using the same technique as for ipconfig /all.

    ping 192.168.10.1

ping <the IP of the second router>

    ping 8.8.4.4

    ping yahoo.com

When you have any of the problems with (attempted) connections to the second router the second thing I'd do is try a connection directly to the powerline bridge.

The powerline stuff is so flaky that it makes Wi-Fi look stable. My top suspicion is that, with the cable between the bridge and the 2nd router being a distant second suspect.
