Hi,

I have a very long cat5 patch cable. Can i use this as an ethernet cable? I tried using it but it didn't work. It is of course possible its damaged.

How long is very long? I believe that Ethernet standards allow a total length of 100 meters (328 feet) of CAT5 cabling between active devices.

You are positive it is a patch cable?
What two devices is the cable connecting?
Do you have a cable tester?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

It is definitely a cat5 patch cable. It is written all along the side of it.7I want to connect it from a router to a PC.

Unfortunately I don't have a cable tester

Well, a "patch cable" is a standard 1:1 Ethernet cable, so unless it's damaged or really long, it should work.

Ok, Thanks.

I was just looking at the wiring in the connecter and the colours seem strange : White, White, Orange, Blue, Blue stripe, Orange Stripe, White, White.

Strange?

Well, are you sure those white ones aren't with a stripe that you can't see? If not, I have no idea what you have there.
