Just installed a new Plextor cd writer c/w software and can't burn a cd. I just received an error message "cannot write to C drive:. My burner is E drive. The Plextor help desk says my problem is in Win98 second edition or dos.

Any ideas what is going on?

    Hello, burnedout

Have you tried removing the device in "device manager" and letting Windows reinstall it

    Good Luck

Yes, tried that. Also removed it by Safe Mode, and in the regedit files, nothing seems to work. Wondering if I have to remove windows et al and start from scratch unless someone knows how to do it in a dosreboot. I'm a little nervous about working in that area of the computer.

    Thanks for the thought.

I certainly don't think this means removing & reinstalling Windows. What is the burning software that came with your drive????
I would try removing the CD-burning software and reinstalling THAT. I just got a new Plex not long ago but I'm using a copy of EZ CD Creator that I already had on hand.
The EZCDC that came with my burner was some kind of "lite" version that wouldn't burn music files (mp3's).
So maybe you need full-strength version (get out your wallet).
There is a free one on the net that appears only to do music called Feurio, but I have no experience with it.

I'm using the supplied software (Easy CD Creator 5 Basic) and the Plextor supplied DiskSupe 2000. You're point is well taken and I may try that later, however, I think I have to discover why my computer is trying to burn on C drive. Somehow I need to change the pointer.

Thanks, I'll give some serious thoughts to trying another software.

Ooops! My stupid missing the pointing to C: drive part.
    Good answer Slipe!
I remember 2 fat upgrades helped EZCDC 4 burn with my old Ricoh 2x immensely!
Slipe- aren't firmware upgrades the kind of critter that if you blow it you need to send the drive back to the factory? I did one once to my old 56K modem with no ill effects, and am contemplating it now for my burner.
Maybe I'm confusing this with BIOS upgrades which I've never been bold enough to try.
