I am using win98. I have a cdr drive that i hooked up as a slave drive to my cd drive. the cd is on the d drive and the cdr is on the e drive. when i put any cd into the e drive now, it freezes everything on the computer. i have to manually shut down the pc. this happens with any cd i put in. the d drive is working fine. this problem just began happening. i have had it running normally for over a year. thanks.

The cdr might have gone bad. Check the connections to the drive. The go into device manager and uninstall the drive. Reboot and let Windows reinstall it.

no changes from that. but i just want to clarify something. if i am at my desktop, and i insert a disc into this e drive, everything will freeze up. i cannot even get to start to shutdown the computer. i have to manually hold the switch in.

If you have the opportunity you could try the drive in another system, but I think there is a good chance it will do the same thing and need to be replaced.
