I have a problem with my CD/DVD drive Windows sees it (assigns drive letter E to it. It opens & closes with no problem either physically or thru Windows.

it's like Windows has a split personality ½ knows it's a drive so it gives it Drive letter but the other half does not know it exists. Any CD, DVD (mini or full size}

Click on play it says there is no disc in that drive and to insert a disc, I get same message if I try and format it

Windows 10 does not play music or video cd or DVD by default. You need to install a cd or DVD playing program to be able to use a CD or DVD in it
It will of course recognize a data or program CD or DVD

Sorry, it should play Music CD with media player, but not DVD
Many people find VLC player is the best option https://www.videolan.org/ make sure you only download direct from videolan.org not any other site to avoid unwanted add ons and adware being added to it

You appear to have an older model HP/Compaq computer.
What's the exact product number(P/N) and serial number(S/N) on it?

I agree with post #2.
Install and use VLC Media Player 2.2.8 (most current stable version).

Check the connections to the DVD drive, if they are ok the drive could have failed.

Do Any DVD or CD, especially a data disc work in that computer or do you get the same message with any disc inserted
if you get the same message with every disc, then I would agree that the drive itself could have failed and you will need to replace the drive
