So all of a sudden my cd and dvd and drives other than c: are not working. They show up in explorer as a drive letter, but windows won't read anything from them (no files listed). BUT Nero will still see it fine and rip a CD to the HD. So will DVD decrypter.

Then I plug in my iPod and it's not working either. I get prompted to format it! Properties says it's a 'RAW' volume, but it works fine on other computers.

So I go into command prompt...

When I try to change to a drive it says "the parameter is incorrect"

A 'chkdsk' of both the CD drives with any software disk loaded, it says "the type of the file system is RAW" and won't do anything

In Disk Managemnet, everything is fine - the volumes are there when I have a CD in the drives and all looks okay. Also it doesn't list a file system for the CD/DVD volumes.

Then i go poking around in 'diskpart' and it lists all the drives as volumes.

My hardware is good, never crashes, power supply is good, etc.

What I have tried so far:
I've tried uninstalling the CD & DVD drives, turing off, unplugging the drives, restarting, then restarting again after plugging them back in. (n)

Tried reinstalling ASPI, Nero infotool shows ASPI "installed and working properly", but no luck (n)

Tried removing the 'upperfiler' and 'lowerfilter' keys in the registry as per this article: http://extended64.com/blogs/andre/archive/2006/01/07/1630.aspx
    but... (n)

i'm normally pretty okay with computers and finding info on errors on google, but this has me really stumped. Especially because it affects my iPOD in the same way as my DVD/CD drives. please help me! :(

    Dave.

Have you tried using SYSTEM RESTORE and restoring back to a date that it all worked?
    Sometimes the simplest things work.
I'm no expert here but a little more info will help the experts.
Do you have, update and use SPY and VIRUS protection?
Do you know what a HJT log is? If so...post one. If you don't...instructions can be found in the SECURITY site here.
    Wishing you luck.

I'm no expert. You might want to post a short cut to this post in SECUITY with a short backgound of the problem. You aren't getting much attention here.
    Good luck.
