    Computer Stopped Regonizing CD drives???

I install new memory, worked fine but the cd drive was gone?...
HDs still being regonized. Switch HDS to Sec. and CD to prim.

Cd still gone, HD still there, switch just cables.
Hd still there Cd still gone, POwer is connected to cddrive cause tray will open.

Cd is not detected by Cmos, dos, or Win95

My conclusion was Drive got shoported somehow..

Bought NEW cd, guess what same problem...

So, what would cause a computer NOT to regonize any cd drives??

Not the memory?? I never heard of that..
Heard a virus is there one that will do that and nothing else, cuase the computer works fine, other then no CD

    Any help I am stumpped

go into device manager and remove the cd-rom from the computer and then restart the computer and see if finds it. Windows should have the drivers for it.

Have you tried to start up with a boot disk(preferably a Win98 boot disk) to see if it is seen that way? Have you checked the cd drive by installing it on the Secondary IDE connection as Master with the hard drive as Primary Master. If you do this, go into the bios setup program and insure that the Secondary IDE is enabled and while in there, if the setting is available, make sure that the Auto Detect is enabled.

1st. There are 2 HDs on the prim and the cd is on the sec.

I have switch both cables as mentioned above in 1st message.

the result was the HD works but not the CD ( so sec ide is working)

I am planing on useing brand new cables hope this works.

I have switch cable with hds and the hds worked but not the cd.

    Q. Is there a virus that could stop a CD but not HDs from being detected??

I know sound far fetch, but I am grabbing at straws...
