I recently had a near catastrophic crash with my WinME system. I had been getting an error in rundll32.exe. the monitor resolution went to the lowest level and most apps were impossible to open. I fixed this by taking the advice I found on another web site. my cd burner now will not recognize any recorded media except cd-rom. I can still burn cds, but I just can't read them. I thought maybe it was just the drive, so I purchased a new cd/dvd-rom drive to replace an old one that was broken in the hopes that I could utilize that one for playing cds and dvds, but it to does not recognize media.

I have both drives set to cable select. the cd/dvd-rom drive is first on the ide and the burner is second, if that helps. also I do not have dma enabled on either drive.

this only started after recovering form the crash. I'm still having little hiccups in my system that I'm slowly weeding out, but I can't figure this one out. I've included all the info I can think of. let me knowif theres anything else you need to know.

Shouldn't the disc drives be on a 'master/slave' configuration instead of cable?

I've never used the cable jumper so I don't know too much about it.

Anything unusual in Device Manager? Try removing the drive there and reboot to reinstall it.

the original cd-rom drive was set to csel as default and worked with the burner which I installed set to csel. not sure if I should change those settings.

Elvandil: I checked the device manager and everything looks normal. if I remove the drives, should I do them one at a time?

I tried to remove the cd/dvd-rom drive from the device manager and rebooted the comp, but nothing changed. I'm at a loss over here.

Can you give more information on the near failure and the solution applied?

what happened was a start up error. as soon as windows loaded I got rundll32.exe causing an error in kernel32.dll. the mouse was lost, the screen resolution went to the 640x480 with 16 colors, everything was running super slow, and some apps didn't work. I could not change the screen resolution because I was promted to reboot, which would cause the error again and keep the screen at that resolution.

after reinstalling the mouse, I was able to get on the internet, although it was painfully slow and looked like jackson pollock had a puked on my screen. I found a way to stop the error by inserting the line drivers=mmsystem.dll in the boot system of system.ini. the error stopped and I was able to reload the video card driver restoring my monitor. I also had to reinstall aol because it got corrupted somehow

afterward my system was pretty much back to normal. I would get some hanging start ups in which both explorer and msgsrv32 would stop responding for a while. aol gives me a message after sign on saying not all services are available. and then theres the error with the cd burner.

just to clarify again, my burner would not recognize any music cd's only cd-rom. I recently replaced my comps orignal non-burning drive because it was broken (long story that happened way b4 this issue) and it to would not read cds or dvds, only cd-roms. device manager says everthing is normal, but it obviously is not.

that seems a little too last resort to me. I don't feel comfortable doing that. I don't want to loose anything if I screw it up. if there is no other alternative I will, but I would need to be walked through the process. but in the mean time, any other ideas of what the problem might be?

For starters, what antispyware apps do you use? You may want to post a HijackThis log in the Security section to eliminate malware as a possibility.

What operating system? A reinstallation may not be such a bad idea with these multiple problems, but we should make sure the system is clean first.

I use the ad-aware se freeware and the aol spy-zapper. I also have mcafee virus scan and firewall express, also provided by aol.

I'm using WinME, btw. I'll post my log in security section to see what needs to be cleaned.
