My machine is an emachines etower 400i; have upgraded to 160 MB RAM and added a Samsung 48-24-48x CD-RW drive. Burner worked fine for the first week, then the computer designated the CD-ROM drive as drives D and F and the CD-RW drive as drives E and G. It will no longer read any CD put into either drive, as it is trying to read them from the non-existent F and G drives, which it doesn't tag as CD devices (has them tagged as "removable drives"). How do I get the thing to not give extra drive assignments to these devices?

Boot to safe mode and go to device manager and remove any extra drives. They wonÂ’t usually show unless you boot in safe mode.

Tried that, but the only way it would let me remove those drives was to remove the devices assigned to them altogether. Once I restarted the computer, it asigned them right back to the same two drive-letters each again. Any other ideas?

just delete both all 4 drives (the 2 good, 2 make-believe) from the Device Manager List. Reboot, it will re-recognize the drives, and that should fix the problem =D
