I am having great troubles with my CD Rom Drive, I am using windows 98 SE.

MY CD ROM is ATAPI Liteon CD ROM LTN382.

When my problem first started my CD Rom would only recognise that there was a disk in it, say every 4th or 5th time.

I tried removing the CD Rom from the device manager and rebooting, my CD Rom worked for about 10 minutes.

I tried resetting the BIOS several times, several different settings, this worked once also. Then it would not go again.

I ran maintainence wizard which found an error on my hard drive and corrected it, I deleted CD Rom and restarted my machine, this worked once also.

I have had success on a few occasions by putting in an audio CD, and running GAMUT 98, and playing the CD, then putting in a data disk. But this won't work now also.

When I insert a disk the CD ROM spins, but after 10-15 seconds the LED on the front gives 2 short flashes and doesn't recognise that a CD is inserted.

I am getting nowhere. I have considered reinstalling windows 98, but how would I do that if I can't get my CD ROM to read the disk.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    First Name:
Have you tried to clean your CD-Rom drive, at most stores they have a cleaning kit for the drives pretty cheap, you may want to give it a shot. Let us know if that helps.

Could also be that it's just about shot. Can you try it in another computer and/or try another cd-rom drive in yours?

Thanks for the suggestions anlore2001 and angel.

I did run a cleaning disk thru the CD ROM when it first started playing up.

I am not confident enough to actually remove the CD Drive, I think I may have to give up and take my machine into the shop. I don't really want to part with it for the time it will take them to look at it.

    Thank you
