This post is just to share some information. Several times I have written regarding a problem with my CD-ROM not working. I was finally advised that it sounded like my CD-ROM drive was kaput. So, I finally bought one (Best Buy $60) and installed it. Same problem. THEN I decided to take my computer to a shop. Guess what the problem was. I needed a new CONTROL CHIP. Cost $45 to replace (labor and parts). Had I known that might have been the problem, I could have saved $60 since the tech said more likely than not the old CD-Rom problem was caused by this and that the old CD-rom is probably fine. The only reason I'm writing is maybe next time someone is experiencing a cd-rom problem that, when all else fails, it might be suggested to have a tech check out the control chip before buying a new CD-ROM.
I sincerely appreciate all the help y'all have given me over the years and maybe this post will help some other frustrated CD-ROM victim!
