I am using Win98. My cd rom drive opens and closes, so it has power. My computer evidently does not recognize the drive. When I start my machine, I get the following error message:

"No valid cd rom drivers selected".

Do I need to purchase a new cd rom, or is there something I can check first? Thanks for any help.

It opens, closes, has power, but does it work? probably not...

First check your BIOS to see if it is being recognised as a device attached to the motherboard. If you don't see it listed under the "General" settings, try an automatic device search(if your BIOS will do that, most have for years).
If you are not getting it to show as a device attached to one of the IDE channels, you should check all the connections(the ribbon cable on the back and to the board, pull them and reseat them).Try the BIOS again after that...

Had any viruses lately? lightning or power outages?
