I am getting a D:drive not ready message when a CD is inserted into the
caddy. This is on a Toshiba Tecra 740CDT laptop. I have check the obvious but am hesitant to get into the safe mode and change things. Any suggestions , I have tried the simple fixes and the hardware listing checks out as ok.Thanks!

    Hiya and welcome

Go to Control Panel | System. Device Manager. Are there any yellow !'s in there, especially on the CD drive? Also, have you added any hardware before this problem was found, like an adapter?

    Regards
