I have windows 98 and recently I realized I could not run my games on my CD Rom. I could play audio CD's until yesterday and now I can't do that.
The initial message I got after clicking on my E drive in the My Computer window was"Windows cannot find DXSETUP.EXE and/or "E is not accessible""The device is not ready"

    Some questions

Does the drive show on bootup on the first screen?

Have you checked in bios to make sure that did not get changed?

What may be happening is corrosion on the pins of the controller cable. If you are comfortable with going inside the computer, unhook the cable from the drive and put it bck on. That will clean the pins and make they will make contact again. Also you try a cd lens cleaner.

Lets us know how you make out.

The drive does show on startup. I'm not sure how to check bios.
I can go inside the computer and I will.
Could it be no more than needing a new driver?
    Thanks for your help

As long as it is showing when you boot there hopefully is no need to go inside.

First try a cd lens cleaner if you have one.

Second go in device manager and see if it is working ok there.
Go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager then clicck on the plus in front of cd. Is there a yellow ! or ? in front of it?

Also while in there right click on the drive and then click properties. Does it show it as working?

Also did you install something just before this started happening? Some software has been known tom mess up drives.

I did use device mgr. and it came out positive. When I right clicked on CD Rom and tried to open it, I got"Device is not ready"
I must still get into the comp. to check the cables.
    Thanks

We had seasons tickets last year, they have some interesting stuff there. I'd guess about 1/2 of the shows are pretty good, although some are not as impressive. :)
