Shutdown the pc, open the case and check the connection on both the cdrom and floppy drives. Then reboot and while booting look to see if any lights flicker on either ofthe drives..

May be a problem with the hard drive there as well. Have him run a scandisk and check for errors on the drive first.

So windows detects the cdrom and the floppy as per "my computer"
The power light flickers on reboot

Next would be to have him check in device manager for any errors there.

You may want to remove them and let windows reinstall them as well.

I just got back. The floppy disk was saying (not accessible) because they didn't have a floppy disk inserted. (lol!) but as for the CD ROM drive goes, it says (CD ROM not attached to this machine) Although there is a cd rom in the device manager and it says (this device is working properly)...there is a floppy disk icon in "my computer", but there is NO CD ROM in there. They will probably need the restoration floppy from Compaq? How can they reinstall windows98 if the cd rom drive isn't attached? I will let them borrow my windows98 cd..they didn't get one with the comp.

It may be that the Ide Cable is bad, the cdrom is bad or the Ide cable is loose. I would try looking at those few things first.
