Help. The CD RW is not reading data. We were attacked by some unpleasant viruses about two weeks ago and the CD RW hasn't worked properly since. The device still plays music CDs and the Hardware Manager indicates the device is working. I replaced the device drivers and the microsoft cd drive extensions. Thanks.
Will it read a regular factory pressed data CD like one of your programs? Or a CDR you wrote using mastering software to a CD that was not formatted? Will your CD-ROM drive read the CDs?
You dont give many details but it sounds like you might have been using packet writing to RW media. The big floppy thing where you format a RW and drag files to the drive. If that is the case your CD shows as another drive on the computer and is vulnerable to virus attack just like your other drives any time your formatted CD is in the burner.
There are gobs of Win32 viruses and worms. I dont know whether any of them would attack files, but you might try to look in the CD with IsoBuster and see if any of the virus files are there: http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/ It is freeware.
Burners dont usually have drivers unless they are external.
Do a search for SCSI1HLP.VXD and change the file extension to OLD. It will interfere with reading VCDs on some systems but might clear up your problem. That is a suggestion form Nero for data files that read as audio. Another is to uninstall PacketCD if it is installed and remove all of the drivers. You have to dig them out of this list if you have PacketCD: http://www.nero.com/en/content/helptool/139.htm#o139
Neither PacketCD nor the VXD file is on my machine.
