serial is much much much slower than usb 1.1

You can get USB 1 external CD burners but .... 99.9% of USB 2 devices work on USB 1. they will normally say in the specification of the device Interface: USB v2.0/1.1 . Running usb 2 on usb 1 just means that the device will run at the speed of usb 1 rather than usb 2 ( which is faster than serial )

You can burn at a maximum of 4x on a CD-R/RW drive on USB 1.1. I've done it, but it's somewhat painful.
You can pick up a USB 2.0 PCI card for around $15, I think that's the way to go...
