How can I tell if my cdrw drive is defective?(about 4 years old)

It reads data ok but it will not write to a disc. I am trying to figure out if this is a software problem or a hardware problem.
I have tried a few different software programs(Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4, Nero 5, and deep Burner) and I still encounter the problem.
