Check a disk for consistency

    Recently, when I've started my computer, I get a blue screen which indicates that one of my disks needs to be checked for consistency. I allow the check to run, everything seems to be fine and the computer then boots up as usual. The blue screen doesn't appear every time but has increased in frequency.

    The computer is four and a half years old and the OS is Windows XP Home. I'm wondering if it's 'old age' that's causing the blue screen/disk check to occur or could it be something else? I've included a current HijackThis report - any advice will be appreciated.

    Does your Hard drive seem noisier than before....if so I would backup important data now.

    Thanks, bonk. I haven't noticed that the hard drive is noisier than usual and most of my important data is already backed up but I'll complete that. From your reply I get the impression that my hard drive might need to be replaced soon?

    Best to always be prepared in any case.

    You could go to the manufactures site of your Hard drive and use their diagnostics tools to test the drive.

    When it does a check disk does it do all the 5 stages?

    Have you Defrag lately?

    You can download diagnostics from your hard drive manufacturers web site and run them on your drive, and that might give you a more devinitive answer.

    But the truth is that a hard drive failure is not an "If", it's a "When". That's one of the reasons they say data that is not backed up is data that you don't want to keep.

    Thanks for the suggestions. I've run disk check and the results say no problems. I ran defrag analysis and it said that defragging wasn't necessary but I'll do it anyway. I've located the manufacturer's website and downloaded a diagnostic tool and will run it. I'll get back to you with the results.

    Hello bonk and bbearen:

    I ran disk check and it said that my files, folders and free space are okay and then gave a list of numerical information. The disk defrag ran fine as well.

    Unfortunately, the hdd diagnostic tool that I had downloaded was for Fujitsu only and I discovered that my hdd is an Hitachi Deskstar 728080PLA380. I've looked for a diagnostic for it but can't seem to find one. The main Hitachi site seems to advertise the company and other sites are in languages I don't understand. If you could direct me to a website that has a diagnostic tool for this brand, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks, bonk. I downloaded an hdd diagnostic utility and followed the instructions. When I re-booted my computer with the utility on a floppy I assume that it ran for I saw no message that indicated a problem or otherwise. As the computer rebooted there was blue pane in the lower right tool bar but it disappeared. Should there have been more than this?

    For now, my hdd seems to be working okay but I have sense that it's on borrowed time.

    I would try both links above.....

    Check in All Programs list and see if a new program is there and then open it

    You should get a window so you can run a check on the Hard drive and see it working

    I am quite new to this site (First post) but I may
    have some insight. I run TWO hard disks, and swap them regularly.
    Please don't ask me why :) The first is an fat32 partition with windowsXP
    and when the computer locks, or is shutoff without using the normal
    procedure, the blue screen he mentioned comes up and checks for
    disk consistency. You have the option to skip it my pressing a key in
    7 seconds or so.

    On my second install, the same OS, is on a NTFS partition and I have NEVER seen it.

    Could he possibly be using a FAT32 partition? If so when windows boots up
    you get the classic "Win98" behavior with scandisk if the OS wasn't
    brought down gracefully.

    Thanks, Bolt_Thrower, you may be on to something but I have another matter that I'd like bonk to help me resolve first.

    The utility I downloaded (I tried it from both links) won't run in Win XP or from the root directory. In the latter when I type in A:\DFT\LOADDFT.EXE I get a missing parameter message, When I try it from XP using the file name in a Start/Run command, a black pane flashes briefly on my screen and then nothing.

    Then you put the floppy in the drive and re-start the PC and don't gey anything?
