I've been working on my fiancee's desktop for the past few days. She's very insistent that I don't uninstall any of the programs in it, so I've updated as many of them as possible. Her 2 teenage daughters do a lot of chatting and on-line gaming. I've run Ad-Aware 2007 and cleaned out over 400 infections. I had a problem with Spybot 1.5.1 losing the internet connection after running a scan with it and cleaning out all the red entries, so I was forced to do a system restore and re-run only Ad-Aware 2007. This is the current log which was run just a few minutes ago. All startup entries, except for AVG and ctfmon.exe, have been unchecked and disabled.

The desktop is a Gateway 500S with an Intel Pentium IV 2.0 GHz processor and 384 MB of PC2700 SDRAM. The hard drive size is 38.2 GB and has 22.0 GB of free space.

Her ISP is Verizon FIOS(2,000 upload/20,000 download). I've currently got it connected to my ISP, BrightHouse Networks Roadrunner(2,000 upload/15,000 download).

    I would appreciate any assistance.

    Frank

    Hi flavallee!

Click on the link below to get lsp-fix.
Run that to fix your internet connection.

    http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Check the box that says "I know what I'm doing".
    Remove rlls.dll only that one!

Reboot and delete the file: c:\windows\system32\rlls.dll

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

I just read your reply on my granddaughter's Windows ME desktop that I've been working on for 2 days. It's after midnight now, so I'm going to bed. I'll be back on the affected Windows XP desktop tomorrow. I'll need to run a new HijackThis log and compare it to your instructions. I installed Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4 instead of version 1.5.1, then ran a scan with it and fixed all the red entries that appeared(except for Wild Tangent because of my fiancee's 2 daughters' habit of playing online games). The internet connection was lost after I rebooted(just like it happened with version 1.5.1). I ran the netsh winsock reset command, then rebooted. That did the trick and got the connection working again. Thanks for your reply. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.(y)

    CyberTech:

Here is the new HijackThis log for my fiancee's desktop. As you can see, the O10 entries are no longer there.

I upgraded Spybot from 1.4 to 1.5.1.15, then ran a new scan. The only entry that appeared in red was Wild Tangent. As I previously advised, I didn't uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs list because her 2 daughters need it for playing online games.

I've increased the RAM from 384 MB to 768 MB.

I can't figure out how to keep GoogleToolbarNotifier unchecked and disabled in the MSCONFIG startup list. I've got the Google Updater Service set to "Manual" in the Services list. It doesn't display being in "Started" mode after I reboot and recheck the Services list. She likes all those toolbars, so don't ask me to get rid of them.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    *******************
Removing this one may keep the GoogleToolbarNotifier silent ;) But you make the choice!

    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Notifier BHO - {AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D} - C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\2.1.615.5858\swg.dll
    *******************

    O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/14...2/cpbrkpie.cab

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Let me know if there are still problems. I hesitate to suggest running scanners that I know you are aware of. ;)

    CyberTech:

Here is a new log after fixing the 4 entries that you posted. One entry was associated with Windows Live Messenger, but it's still working okay. (y)

I opened a IE 7.0 window and found all 5 toolbars to still be present. The GoogleToolbarNotifier startup problem seems to be fixed. (y)

If I had my way, I'd trim down the list of O16 entries, but I'm going to leave them alone. :(

I'm happy if you are... must be tough to not be in control! :p

Thank you very much for all your help. :D :) (y)

After 21 years of diving and exploring underwater caves, I gave it up diving for good in June. My son-in-law is doing it now, so I sold all my dive gear to him. Now I can devote more time to computers. :D
