My computer is an AMD Athlon 1700+ operating system Windows XP Professional. 256 RAM and 40 GB Hard disk.

Of late during booting it goes for checkdisking one of the HDD partitions. It says it is dirty. There is no way of defraging it.

What happens when you defrag?

The drive may be on its way to heaven . . first, back up any data you cherish . . then download and run diagnostics from the drive manufacturer to rule that out.
