I was just playing Half-Life 2 when my PC froze and I had to force a restart. Upon restart, CHKDSK started and went through phases 1-3 just fine. It then said something about the USN Journal (verifying... and then verified), and looked like it was going to restart and let me back into Windows to carry on with what I was doing.

But ten to fifteen minutes later and my HDD light is still on, and the screen is saying the exact same thing... "USN Journal verification completed".

Anyone know what it's up to?

Thanks. I suppose I should leave it for a while then; how long? It's quarter past midnight at the moment so I could leave it on all night.

    let it run.

it'll either hang up with a problem or restart windows.

It's been doing whatever for 7 hours now. How long should I wait? I'm getting annoyed because I can't see if it's actually doing anything, but I'd like to get on it.

Here's exactly what it says on screen:

    "Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is NTFS
    Volume label is Main.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
    File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
    Index verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)...
    Security descriptor verification completed.
    CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...
    Usn Journal verification completed."

It took about five or ten minutes to get up to that part, and like I said, that was 7 hours ago. Ever since the action light on my tower has been consistently on, but nothing at all (as far as I know) has changed on-screen.

It may indicate that there are some bad sectors that chkdsk cannot get past.

Best to go to the drive vendors site and get a diagnositic utility from them.

I forced a restart, it re-scanned and got through it fine this time.

    It's a Western Digital Caviar WD1600JD 160GB.

I'm not sure what caused it to hang at the end of the first scan, the second one seemed to finish within about ten minutes (I turned on the PC, saw it start, then went downstairs; by the time I came back Windows was starting up).
