Hi, in a Chromebook all of your data should be saved in Google Drive.
Is that the case with you?
Recovery mode
Press and hold Esc + Refresh then press Power on button
Then let go of Power.

To reset the Chromebook that will not start up - turn on and hold down
Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R
Doing the above may remove all data not saved in Google drive.

I would first check on another pc in an internet cafe, library, etc, what data is saved in Google drive.

As you will know you can switch from Chromebook to a [partial] Linux system, but you have to be logged into the Chromebook to do so.
What is the make of your Chromebook?
Is it still under warranty?
In the library did you check Google drive and is all your data and files, saved there?
The Chrome recovery utility - does seem to be your only option at the moment.

How did you install Ubuntu on the Chromebook?
When you switch to Linux, all that is available as far as I know, is the terminal windows where you can load certain commands and use some Linux programs.

======
On a working pc, sign into Google Drive and check if your data is there.

======
On your Acer Chromebook - there should be a reset hole on the base of the pc.

Chromebook is based on the Linux kernal but it's not much more than the Google browser, with usable Apps and some storage space.
There is no real hard drive as you get in say, Windows 10.

Are you saying you were trying to do a full install of Ubuntu and it is then that it became un-usable?

Whatever command you typed into the terminal it was never going to start an install, let alone complete one.
Your only option is the Chromebook recovery media, if you can find a working pc. Then using a USB, SD card to download the operating system and hoping that on start up it recognises the files and lets you start the install.

Edit
Is there a reset hole on the base of the Acer Chromebook?
