after I restarted yesterday morning, I now get this popup error message every
30 seconds ( sometimes it comes out every 5 seconds):
'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library : Runtime Error!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.'

This is probably due to the indexing service. I have windows xpsp2 with all
updates installed from windows update site.
How would I solve this? I need the indexing service. I tried to do a system
restore but that failed.
Indexing service (cisvc.exe) is running. Of cource if I do 'net stop cisvc', the error will go, but I can't since I need the indexing service.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

OS: Windows xp pro + sp2 + latest updates installed from WU site.

Did the System Restore fail to run, or fail to resolve it?

If it failed to run or complete, try it from Safe Mode.

It failed to complete. I think the checkpoints are corrupted. I tried both in normal and safe mode. Anyway, I never did rely on system restore.
Any suggestions regarding the error message?

I'd try clean booting the system first to see if it is a conflict issue. I don't think you need to disable services, but I'd run msconfig and uncheck the startup group for a test.

If you disable services, be sure to HIDE all Microsoft services first.

And you may want to check the Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc) for any associated errors in the Applications or System log that might be relevant.

It's possible you may have some corrupt files on the disk causing the error, and chkdsk may be in order as well.
