My sil is trying to do a clean install of windows, which she's done many times before on her system. This time, however, she gets a little ways into it, to the part where it says Windows 98 is preparing to copy system files, and gets the following error message "System Error number 65, corrupt cab file, windows 98 will attempt to recover...press ok to continue" pressing ok just leads to a long wait and the same error repeating.????

Any guesses or suggestions??

TIA

TT:)

It could be the CD is going bad or it's dirty. Try cleaning it with a dry soft cloth.

If that doesn't work try copying the CD to harddrive and running setup from there

Boot to the W98 boot diskette and choose the option to start with CDRom support. Reformat the drive and then follow the steps underneath the format command to install from the harddrive.

format c:

md c:\windows
md c:\windows\options
md c:\windows\options\cabs
copy d:\win98\*.* c:\windows\options\cabs\*.*

Now remove the CD.

At the a:\> prompt type in the following and press enter.

c:\windows\options\cabs\setup

You'll be prompted during the install that the Windows folder already exists and it will suggest you install to Windows.000

Remove the .000 from the end and let it install to the existing folder, Windows

Let us know what happens.
