I have a question about some of the programs out there like system mechanic and tuneup. Are these programs worth it or do they do more harm than good? If they are worth it, which one is the best and easisest to use/understand?

Since they include registry cleaners, they are not a good idea. Disk Cleanup is the safest way to get rid of unneeded files. Those programs can sometimes find other temp files that are not needed, but they don't usually amount to much space and can remove backups that you may need at some point.

If you need space, get a bigger drive and leave the "cleaning' alone.
