Can drive image software clone a hard drive for use in a new pc? Would the image of winxp work in the new pc since the hardware was different? If not then wouldn't winxp have to be reinstalled from its cd? If that was the case then wouldn't all other programs have to be reinstalled from their cd's since their image wouldn't be referenced in the new install of windows?

    Yes in all cases, basically

An image would contain all the (wrong) drivers for the motherboard chipset, graphics etc, unless both motherboards are identical. Booting would be doubtful.

Even then XP would throw a fit and require re-activation (so you could not use a copy that was already installed)

You could try it, then doing a Repair to see if it would pick up the right drivers, but its likely to be unreliable in operation, assuming you have a valid CD key that you could change it to in order to activate.

Remember that an OEM copy of Windows is locked for life to the original hardware by the license, if not by the activation.
