I have a device (a weather station) that expects to be connected to my laptop through the same com port all the time. The weather station uses a serial link, and since my new laptop doesn't have a serial connector, I am using a serial to USB conversion cable. The problem occurs when I disconnect the USB cables in order to take the laptop elsewhere, then later reconnect the cables. More often than not, the USB to serial device gets assigned to a different com port than previously assigned to it. I then need to to go into the device manager and find the com port that it is assigned to, then go into the weather station application and change its com port assignment. This is a real PITA and I am wondering if there is a way to freeze a port assignment to the USB to serial device. My OS is XP Pro, and the laptop is a Dell XPS.

    Thanks in advance
    Steve

I don't think so, that's one of the things that comes along with the ability of USB to be "Hot Swapable". It picks things up on the fly, I don't think you can "lock" that.

Thanks to Longhair for his insight on this 'problem'. It was pretty much what I expected, but I was in hopes someone knew a way around this.

    Thanks again,
    Steve
