Com Port Problem

Hooked up palm pilot to 9 pin serial com port. Keep getting "can't initialized com port 1" Attempted to try other ports as well, but continue to receive same error message.

Any way to get the port to recoginze the hardware? I have tried restarting, installing "new hardware" in control panel without sucess.
