I was having a hardware conflict and my pc told me to get rid of one of the offenders. So I made COM port 3 disappear. Now my DVD drive is not accessible. How do I find COM port 3 to put it back? What is a COM port anyway?

A COM port is a communications port and shouldn't cause your DVD any grief if you removed it or not. Go into control panel and select the system icon and click the device manager tab. Look for any devices listed that have a yellow exclamation point next to them. You can check what devices are using which IRQ by double clicking the computer icon in device manager.
