Beginning recently, at each boot, the Common folder appears on my desktop. Have seen a number of suggestions on how to stop it. The simple suggestions don't work and the more involved ones, such as regedit, are too complicated for me to dare try, lest I screw something up. Finally I went to Start/My Computer/Folders/My Computer/Local Disk/Program Files/Common, and deleted Common (sent it to the recycle bin). After doing this, it no longer appeared at boot. That is the good news. Is there any bad news?

I am the only user of this computer. Do I need a Common folder? If I do, for what purpose? And if I need it, is there a way to create a new one, that, hopefully will not appear at boot? I tried restoring it from the recycle bin but, again, it appears at boot.

Well yes. All the applications that had files in that folder will no longer run!!!

What REGEDIT suggestions are you afraid to try?

And, BTW, is it called "Common" or "Common Files"?

Is a folder called "Common Files" opening when you boot up your computer?

The folder that opens on boot is titled "Common" in the upper left corner. It is empty.

Re: REGEDIT. Each time I have seen suggestions to use it, I see cautionary comments about taking care when using it, to avoid messing something up. I am not computer-savvy and am apprehensive about this kind of thing.

If it is COMMON and not COMMON FILES and is empty, then deleting it may be the best way to go.

But, I would also download, install and run HiJackThis.

Copy/paste the created LOG file back here for review, in case the folder was/is part of a malware infection.

But, as I look at this, it seems to be a small fraction of the LOGfile. I highlighted all of it, copied, and pasted it here. What am I doing wrong?

After I sent the LOGfile, it does appear to be all of it.

WhitPhil, does anything look suspicious in my HijackThis Log file?

    I don't see anything malicious.

I deleted (sent to the recycle bin) my Common folder and created a new one. It no longer appears when I turn on the computer. Don't know that I ever used that folder. If I need to in the future, I hope the new one that I created will be functional.

I am considering this matter and this thread closed.
