I decided to use a firewall other than the Windows firewall. I tried Zone Alarm which completely messed up my machine. I then installed Comodo. This was just as bad, in fact it got to the stage where my machine would boot but then freeze at the desktop stage so that the only way I could get it to work was to switch it off. I managed to do a system restore. I have used both ZA and Comodo in the past without difficulty but I am not going to tempt fate by trying again. My son also had trouble with ZA but eventually got it to load. Does anyone know why this happens? I have gone back to the Windows firewall.

    which antivirus are you using
many antiviruses have a firewall component that clashes with ZA & Comodo or you installed the comodo or ZA security suite & not the stand alone firewall so you have 2 clashes between anti-viruses

    Thank you, Derek,
I am using Avast antivirus. As far as I am aware, when trying to instal the firewalls I unticked those parts of the suites I did not want. I did not try to instal one over the other. I shall stick with the Windows firewall for the the time being.

    Good choice. (y)

I've personally never been a fan of third-party firewalls. (n)
