Comp hanging at shut down

Almost every time that I shut down my computer now, its hangs with the wall paper still visible but no icons on the desktop. Little help here please??

yeah sorry i forgot to include the OS, which is Win ME. If you could give me a link for troublshooting shutdown problems using that OS then i would be very grateful.

I had the same problem for a long time and two things fixed it. My computer never hangs during shutdown any more. I had tried the Microsoft Shutdown fix and it did not help.
1) I changed ISP from AOL and removed AOL software. It did have something to do with the hangup at shutdown, I think with the PPPoe protocol. This alone did not fix the problem but I did see an improvement. The next fix is what did it for good.
2) I downloaded and ran X-Setup. It's like TweakUI but more powerful. One of the options is to allow X-Setup to override programs that hang at shutdown. Since then, I no longer hang up at shutdown. It was a free download. Search for it and I recommend you try it. (No, I don't work for X-Setup.)
I have Win98 so I'm not aware if this will work for WinME. It's worth a shot.
