Okay, I deleted those things and reset my web settings.
As you said, it didn't get rid of the access to secure sites problem, but it's good to know that I've rid myself of a few nasties, thanks!

I know that many people were experiencing problems trying to sign into hotmail and msn, and I thought it might have been the same, but I've noticed similar problems with other secure areas as well. sigh.

Do you use any firewalls that block cookies or ad blocking progs ?
It seems to me to be a security setting somewhere on your computer. Either in a 3rd party app or in your security settings under internet options.

I don't use a firewall at all; and I think you're right about the security settings, but I thought if taht were the case it might have righted itself when the settings were reset? Until three weeks ago it worked fine.
At that time I had taken my computer to a tech shop for them to look at, (was considering getting a cd writer installed), is it possible that having it connected there could have altered something?
Anyway, and advice with the settings would be received gladly.
thanks, Shelob

Ok lets try a process of elimination here.

In Internet options/security tab
Are any sites listed in the Restricted sites area ?
If not then set the custom level to low and see if you can access the site you need to.
MAKE SURE you reset this to medium after the test, it will probably already say medium when you go to change it but make sure you click the reset button.
Let me know if that works

Thank you for your ongoing patience so far!
right, I checked, there are no sites in the restricted list.

Then I tried putting the custom level to low, and still no success; when I went to put it back again it seemed to have already reset itself to high; I don't know if that's important.

Make sure to reset it to medium (even if it already says medium) hit the reset button to make sure.
Can you post the link to the site you are trying to access and I will try to emulate the problem here.

Hm, I'm afraid I don't know if I can, because the problems are with signing into things like Hotmail and the securest part of Yahoo (I could use yahoo mail, but it wouldn't 'display the page' when I tired to change my password), or am I just being unspeakably dense? Oh dear.

Ok I will change a few things here and see if I can 'Break" anything that will stop me signing into hotmail ;)
Will post back in a few minutes.

No I couldn't get the problem to occur other than setting the cookies to high I was granted access each time. One last shot go into Internet Options and click the advanced tab then select restore defaults at the bottom (May require you to reboot)
Other than Updating/re-installing /repairing IE6 I am fresh out of suggestions :(

To use the repair tool do the following/
Click Start/programs/accessories/system tools/ system information/ From the top tool bar select tools and internet explorer repair tool/ run it - if it asks for the win 98se cd rom - point it to c:/windows/options/cabs

Try a repair first, although I'm not confident :(
