I have windows xp and recently had my computer to crash; got everything loaded again and when I boot I get this error message:

    Companion.exe unable to locate component
Application failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I have no idea what application they are talking about. All my programs seem to run fine, do I even need this file??

    Thanks for any help!! :)

Companion.exe is the file that runs the AOL Cmpanion. Go to your AOL icon in the notification area (systray), bring up AutoStart options and untick Companion - it doesn't do much anyway except slow AOL down online - and that should stop that error message. If it doesn't, go Start>Run type in msconfig and go to the Startup tab. Untick the box by AOL Companion and hit OK. You'll force a restart and when the computer comes back, it will show a message box. Tick the "don't show me this message again" box and hit OK.
