When I turn my laptop on it just boots to a black screen. I see the messages F12 and such, but after that nothing. I went into BIOS and there's not much there, does seem to be recognizing my hard drive. I connected my hard drive, via USB, to my other computer and it seems to work fine.

if the drive isnt showing in the boot order or the bios its very possible the drive is failing. i hope you are able to retrieve anything of importance before it goes completely.

Hi, Amazonios, have you tried booting into safe mode?

Do you have the Windows XP disc?

Were you able to save copies of all your important files?

As you are able to see the drive in the Bios then it could be that your Master Boot Record has corrupted. Please answer the above then I should be able to help you.

The drive doesn't show at all, connected to my laptop. Safe mode doesn't work, and using XP for restore doesn't work for it. But the drive works fine when I USD connect it to the computer I'm using now.

My original guess stands that the hard drive is just about toast. if you havent saved anything yet i hope you do before the drive goes completely.

You can run the manufacturer's diagnostics with it connected to your other PC. This will confirm its condition.

The drive isn't "toast" if there's no problem reading and writing from and to it while connected to another computer. The problem seems to be with the laptop. Recovery your data, and buy a new laptop.

"Warning! One or more current or worst-case attributes are below threashold.

Hit ANY KEY to continue. . ."

Is what happens when I try to run a test from the disc. And after I press a key it says my laptop must shut down.

Try to run the diagnostics from your working PC (with the laptop hard drive connected to USB) and see if it will run on that. Or is that what you did?

Looking into many other threads where that error message is reported they all conclude with a faulty hard drive. The test will prove it.

I would suggest you back up all the data off it that you want to save before you do anything else.

If the drive proves to be at fault and is failing or did fail i hope you saved what you really need and then replace the drive.

Ok, I would just do one more test but it looks like the drive has some bad sectors on it i.e. it is failing.

With the drive still connected to the USB on the good computer clcik on Start, then Run.
Type cmd in the run box and hit Enter.
At the command prompt type chkdsk /r E: then hit Enter.
Let the test complete as it may take some time and might appear to freeze on ocassion. It will display the results on screen as it progresses so keep an eye on it. Make a note of the results and put them in your next post.

NOTE You must replace the E: in the command line with the drive letter that is shown in explorer for the drive under test.

The instructions above assume you have XP on the working computer, if it is Vista or Windows 7 then Click Start, type cmd in the search box and when cmd appears in the pop up menu right click on it and select "Run as Administrator". Then follow the rest of the instructions.

That confirms that the disk is failing and should be replaced.
