When booting the laptop a message that a file is corrupt is shown and the system halts with a blue / black screen.

This is caused by a disk crash or controller error on the laptop. Use diagnostics (f10 on boot-up) to verify if Disk is dead or not.

When a new disk is supplied by HP you need to set up the bios options to avoid native SATA mode otherwise windows XP install will not recognise the disk (bitter experioence here!)

    Enjoy
