Solved Comparison I5 8400 to a I7 8700 cpu

I have been getting my parts together in order to build a new computer. I bought a I5 8400 CPU instead of an I7 because the I7 was more money than I wanted to spend. But now I see that Newegg has a I7 8700 for a little more than the $100.00 I spent on the I5 CPU. I know that the I7 will be faster but really how much faster will it be? I will have a Samsung 950 512 SSD boot drive with a Nvidia 1050 along with 16gb DDR 4 memory. I am not a gamer but do some video editing. Should I return the I5 and purchase the I7?

Are you sure you have an Intel Core i5-840 processor, or did you make a typo?

I was able to find the Intel Core i7-870 processor you mentioned, but not the other one.

What's the brand name and complete model number of the motherboard you're building your computer with?

That i7 cpu is about a 10 year old chip and Intel lists it at being ddr3 compatible, not ddr4

Robert, I think we need to see what motherboard model you are using to check out incompatibilities.

It appears you omitted a 0 in both processor descriptions.

You meant to say Core i5-8400 instead of Core i5-840.

You meant to say Core i7-8700 instead of Core i7-870.

According to their benchmark scores, the latter processor is about 30% faster.
