Whenever I've tried to play music, a dvd or video of any sort, or play a game my computer has been getting complete freeze ups. The problem only started around 3 - 4days ago.

I play music in Itunes, and this is where the problem started, however, I have also tried using winamp and vlc but I get the same problem. I can get anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes of music before the problem occurs but when it does it locks up the whole computer, i can move my mouse around but nothing can be clicked, no keyboard commands are working (ctrl + alt + del, alt + f4 etc.). When the song freezes it will constantly loop the second of the song that it froze on but no other worrying sounds are made by any part of the computer.

If I'm watching a video I once again get between 30 seconds and 10 minutes before a problem occurs, the audio will carry on as normal, but the video will hang and thats when the whole computer freezes. Once again, no keyboard commands work, and the mouse can move but not interact.
When playing games everything is fine until i try to close the game or click (or alt + tab) away from it, then it will get caught half way between the command and freeze up the entire computer just like the other causes of freezing.

The only way I can un-freeze my computer is to turn it off at the power button or using the restart button.

I've used various anti-virus, registry cleaner, diagnostic tools etc. but nothing seems to have helped the situation, a system restore to a time before the problem occured didnt come up with any promising results either.

If anyone has any ideas of something to try it'd be greatly appreciated.

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

Click on Start > Run > type msconfig

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all items related to the following RED entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VTTimer] VTTimer.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3Trayp] S3trayp.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RTHDCPL] RTHDCPL.EXE

    O4 - Global Startup: HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqthb08.exe

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Other than your antivirus and firewall, the Startup Type on most of your non-Windows Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

To do so, click on Start > Run > type services.msc

Scroll down the list and locate your non-Windows services (023 HijackThis
log entries). Change their Startup Type from Automatic to Manual, then Stop the services.

    Non-Windows Services:

    O23 - Service: Apple Mobile Device - Apple Inc. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe

    O23 - Service: AVG Free E-mail Scanner (avg9emc) - AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o. - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9\avgemc.exe

Managed to do all that with only one hiccup.
When i try to set O23 - Service: Pml Driver HPZ12 - HP - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe to manual i get a pop up message saying "Unable to open service Pml Driver HPZ12 for writing on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied.

Everything seems to be running alot smoother however so your definetly onto something here :D. I'm going to attempt to play a video to see if the problem is still evident and i'll post back here afterwards.

Thanks very much for your help so far Phantom

Hmm, >_< well I got about 5 mins of video then the freeze came back.
I also did a malware scan which came up with 4 infections, however, the programme was able to delete them without any trouble.
